The FWPD K9 Support Group was established to provide funding for the advanced training and equipment needs of the Fort Worth Police K9 Unit. Although financially supported by the City of Fort Worth, the Unit often found itself without needed equipment due to today's ever increasing budgetary demands.
In addition, the fund covers expenses related to the retired Police Service Dogs within the City of Fort Worth. Before the fund was established, the handler was personally responsible for all costs associated with keeping his or her retired dog. Now all of those costs, including all food and vet care, are covered allowing the retired dog to comfortably live out their days as a cherished member of the handler's family. The fund provides for training classes and seminars for the current dog teams as well as any equipment not budgeted by the City. The fund is currently covering 17 dogs within the Fort Worth Police Department and Fort Worth Fire Department Bomb and Arson Units.
